HealthSeekers Accelerator Insights #2: Hydration... The Simplest Health Intervention You're Probably Overlooking

If you asked most fitness professionals where to start with someone's health, the answers would probably sound familiar...

Exercise more. Lose weight. Improve your diet. Sleep better.

All good advice.

But across the first cohort of HealthSeekers Accelerator operators, one pattern keeps appearing...

The lowest scoring area on the Daily100 isn't activity. It isn't recovery. It isn't even nutrition.

It's hydration.
daily100 scores

At first glance, that's surprising, but actually, we think it's one of the most encouraging findings we've seen. Because hydration is also one of the simplest health behaviours to improve.

The perfect first win

The fitness industry has become very good at designing transformational programmes.

Twelve weeks. Eight weeks. Six weeks. "Before and after."

HealthSeekers takes a different approach... Instead of asking someone to change everything, we help them identify one thing that feels achievable.

  • Sometimes that's walking
  • Sometimes it's going to bed earlier
  • Sometimes it's eating more fruit

But remarkably often...

  • It's simply drinking more water

That might sound almost too simple, but that's precisely the point.

Success doesn't have to be dramatic. It just has to happen.

Why hydration matters

Hydration quietly influences almost every part of daily life.

  • Better concentration
  • More energy
  • Improved mood
  • Better recovery
  • Exercise performance
  • Even body composition measurements become more reliable when hydration improves

Yet it's rarely the headline topic of a fitness consultation (perhaps because it feels too obvious).

Ironically, that's exactly why it works... Nobody feels intimidated by drinking another glass of water.

Accelerator Insight

One HealthSeeker, Heidi, came in for a HealthCheck a while ago now.

She wasn't looking to "get fit." She simply wanted to feel less tired.

Talking through her body composition results, she noticed her hydration score was lower than expected.

Rather than trying to overhaul her entire lifestyle, she chose to focus on one simple thing with her coach... Drink more water.

Together they discussed practical ways to make that easier during her working day.

A month later she returned for another HealthCheck.

Her metabolic age had reduced by two years.

More importantly... She told us she had more energy and simply felt better.

Did water alone reduce her metabolic age? Probably not.

But improving hydration often leads to other positive changes too. People begin making better food choices. They feel more energetic. They become more active. One positive behaviour often triggers another. And that's the real lesson.

The psychology is more important than the physiology

HealthSeekers isn't really about hydration. It's about confidence.

When people experience an early success, they start believing change is possible. That belief becomes incredibly powerful.

"I've managed this."
"So perhaps I can improve something else."

Behaviour change doesn't usually begin with motivation. It begins with success.

And success is far more likely when the first step feels achievable.

What does this mean for operators?

One of the biggest lessons emerging from the Accelerator is that coaching isn't about finding the biggest problem. It's about finding the easiest opportunity.

Most operators already know how to prescribe exercise. The opportunity is learning how to coach behaviour. Helping people discover the one change they're genuinely ready to make.

That's where HealthSeekers is beginning to make a real difference.

Not because we're asking people to do more. But because we're helping them start.

Looking ahead

Perhaps we've overcomplicated health. Sometimes the most important intervention isn't a sophisticated programme or the latest wearable technology.

Sometimes it's simply helping someone drink another bottle of water today.

That one small success might not transform their life overnight. But it could transform what they believe they're capable of tomorrow. And that's often where lasting change begins.

HealthSeekers Accelerator Insights #1: The Conversation Matters More Than the Measurement

When we launched the HealthSeekers Accelerator, we weren't trying to create another fitness programme, we were trying to answer a much bigger question.

How do we engage people who want better health but don't identify with gyms, exercise or sport?

HealthSeekers itself wasn't new. We'd already run successful HealthChecks, invited former members back into clubs, and seen operators use body composition technology to start meaningful conversations.

Some people re-joined as members, which was encouraging, but many didn't return for a second appointment. Operators often found themselves slipping back into membership sales mode, while some fitness professionals were still learning how to coach with empathy rather than simply prescribe exercise.

The Accelerator was designed to bridge that gap.

It provides operators with structured coaching pathways, ready-made programmes, shared learning, marketing campaigns and regular support, helping clubs move from one-off HealthChecks to long-term health engagement.

In other words, to change the behaviour of HealthSeekers, we need to change our own behaviour, stop reverting to type, and transform!

The first cohort is still in its early stages, but it's already teaching us some valuable lessons.

The conversation matters more than the measurement

One of our earliest assumptions was that people would be fascinated by their body composition report. After all, modern technology can provide more than 25 different health measurements in just a few seconds... But that's not what we've found.

Most HealthSeekers don't want to understand every number on the printout. In fact, too much information can become overwhelming. Instead, they naturally focus on two or three measurements that matter to them personally.

  • For some it's visceral fat
  • For others it's muscle mass
  • But more often, it’s metabolic age

The numbers create curiosity... The conversation creates understanding.

People don't simply want data. They want context. They want reassurance. They want someone to help them understand what the results mean for them, and, more importantly, what small steps they can take next.

Accelerator Insight

The value isn't in the body composition technology. It isn't even in the numbers.

The value is in the coaching conversation that follows. Most people don't want to be told what to do. They want someone to listen, help them make sense of their health, and guide them towards changes they feel confident making for themselves.

One of our coaches recently shared a wonderful example. A HealthSeeker returned for their second appointment and decided not to repeat the body composition measurement.

Instead they said:

"I felt amazing after our last appointment. Really motivated and excited. I wanted that feeling again before my next measurement."

That moment reinforced something we've long believed. The motivation created by a great conversation can be more valuable than the measurement itself.

Better conversations don't stop with HealthSeekers

Another unexpected lesson has been the impact on coaching teams.

We expected HealthSeekers to help staff engage non-members. What we didn't fully appreciate was how quickly those coaching skills transferred to existing members.

Once instructors become comfortable asking about health, listening carefully and coaching behaviour change, those conversations naturally continue throughout the club…

  • Members receive more meaningful reviews
  • Staff become more curious
  • Goals become more personal
  • Interactions become less transactional and more supportive

This is one of the reasons we often talk about Retention by Stealth.

HealthSeekers isn't a retention programme. Yet better conversations improve engagement for everyone... HealthSeekers, members and staff alike.

Progress starts with small wins

Perhaps the biggest lesson of all is that behaviour change rarely begins with dramatic transformation.

It begins with confidence. And confidence usually comes from a simple success.

  • Drink another bottle of water
  • Take a short walk after lunch
  • Go to bed thirty minutes earlier
  • Eat an extra piece of fruit

None of these changes will transform someone's life overnight, but they prove something much more important.

"I can do this."

Those early wins create momentum, and momentum builds lasting habits. It's one of the reasons we're encouraging operators to celebrate progress, not perfection.

Looking ahead

The programme is still young, and we're only beginning to gather evidence from the first cohort. But one thing is already becoming clear. Most people don't want another fitness fad. They don't wake up wanting to exercise more.

They wake up wanting to feel better. They want more energy. Better sleep. Greater confidence. A healthier future.

In short, they don't just want a fitness instructor... They want a health coach.

And that's where our industry's biggest opportunity lies.

Confessions of a Water Fountain

I'm probably the most popular piece of equipment in your gym

You might not have noticed, because…

  • Nobody posts selfies with me
  • Nobody asks how to use me
  • Nobody boasts about setting a new PB on me

Yet almost everyone visits me...

  • The first-time member who isn't quite sure where to go
  • The regular who's been coming for twenty years
  • The keen beans training for HYROX
  • The grandmother attending her first exercise referral class
  • The personal trainer
  • The cleaner
  • The CEO

I'm one of the few places in the club where everyone has something in common.

Retention by Stealth (or The Hidden Retention Benefits of HealthSeekers)

HealthSeekers Wasn't Built for Retention. But It Helps Retention Anyway.

HealthSeekers was designed to engage people who want better health but aren't ready for traditional membership.

The goal wasn't retention... The goal was engagement.

Yet operators are consistently reporting retention benefits.... Why?

Building a Culture Where Staff Stay and Members Thrive

In most health clubs, retention is treated as a number to manage.

  • A percentage on a report
  • A monthly KPI
  • Something to fix when it drops

But the reality is simpler, and more challenging:

Retention is a daily behaviour, not a monthly metric.

It’s shaped by what happens on the gym floor, at reception, in conversations, and in the first few weeks of a member’s journey. And crucially, it’s driven by the people delivering those experiences.

That’s the focus of our Retention Leadership Workshop, helping clubs move beyond tactics and start building a culture where both staff and members stay.

Make it Easy to Leave, and More People Will Stay

For years, the fitness industry has relied on friction to retain members.

Long notice periods. Hidden clauses. Phone-only cancellations.

It worked… on paper.

But that model is now under pressure. Regulation is tightening around “subscription traps,” customer expectations are shifting, and the tolerance for opaque cancellation processes is disappearing fast.

We asked recently: what’s the last subscription you tried to cancel?
The responses weren’t about price or value; they were about frustration.

That’s the real issue.

The problem isn’t that people leave.
It’s how they feel when they do.

The old model: friction as retention

There’s a long-standing industry assumption that if you make cancellation harder, fewer people will cancel.

This is technically true... but commercially short-sighted.

Friction doesn’t create loyalty.
It creates resentment… and that shows up somewhere else:

  • Negative word of mouth
  • Lower trust at point of sale
  • Reduced likelihood of rejoining
  • Brand damage that compounds over time

People don’t forget bad exits.
And in fitness, where rejoining is common, that matters more than most sectors.

Your Retention Problem Isn’t Pricing. It’s Silence.

Recently, an article in The Guardian explored something simple but powerful: we’re losing the art of talking to strangers.

  • Banks are digital
  • Supermarkets are self-checkout
  • Food ordering is app-based
  • Even everyday services that once required conversation are now screen-led.

We’ve removed friction from modern life, and in doing so, we’ve removed conversation.

And that matters.

Because for many people, the leisure centre, health club or gym is now one of the last remaining places where real, human interaction still happens.
